Religion's evil side

A quick short story.
The other day I was hanging out with a few people I had never met before. A very chill group of people. At one point, "Lisa" and I began discussing religion. (I can already see you start to shudder) I consider myself agnostic; she is a devout Christian. When I expressed my view her reply was something along the line of, "thats okay, God put people like you here to test the strength of my faith." Wow! She basically said, "you don't believe what I believe, so your opinion isn't worth a shit." Thank you so much.
When I realized that she was a psycho, Jesus-dick rider (go ahead, tell me I'm going straight to hell), I quickly excused myself. There's no reason to engage in discussion with people like that. They believe what they believe. Any opinion that isn't in line with their own they reduce to simple child's speak.
This is one of the many, many ugly sides of religion. It divides people. Me and her were most likely pretty similar people with similiar goals and aspirations. However, when she found out I wasn't a Christian as she was, nothing that I said after that had any credibility.
Yes, religion has plenty of upside too. I don't disagree with that. It's instances like these, though, that just turn me off to organized religion. We are all one people, who should be sharing and caring for this earth and for one another. Regardless of race, religion, sex, political affiliation, etc. we are all in this together. As soon as we can realize this, the world will be a much, much better place.
