The planned erection of a holy temple near "Ground Zero" of the 9/11 has this country in an uproar. Conservative Americans (primarily) have their granny panties in a knot. You'd expect it from our Muslim president though, wouldn't you? Oh, and the whole Muslim religion flew planes into the buildings, didn't they? No, it was a few extremists, even though the debate on that is still out... Even if that were the case, how is it fair to blame an ENTIRE religion based on a few extremists?
And then we have folks like Rev Terry Jones of Florida, who is scheduling a Koran burning on the anniversary of 9/11. Just when I thought we looked shitty enough... Now we have a man of the cloth coming out publicly and announcing a Koran burning? This is insane. As a man of deep religion and spirituality he should understand that no religion is greater than another. What would happen if a Muslim Imam came out and spoke against Christianity? (These same Conservative Americans would have their granny panties in a knot again..)
This is supposed to be a country based on religious tolerance and acceptance but this event is showing the entire world that we aren't. We're tolerant, as long as you're a white Christian male... It's no wonder that the world hates us. This country embraces the majority and oppresses the minority; these events unfolding in the past couple of days put it on the global spotlight.
How long can we keep pretending that this is the land of the free? How long will it take for us to see that the road to the American dream is paved with inhumanness, ignorance, and intolerance?
